How to manually clean your email list
Email deliverability
Cleaning your list means removing inactive, unsubscribed and bounced addresses. Sending to addresses which do not exist lowers your deliverability and harms your sender reputation. Aim for an open rate of at least 20%. See How to improve the deliverability of my emails (advanced tips).
1. Delete inactive contacts who never bought
- In the CRM tab, click Contacts.
- Turn on the Email activity filter, and in No email opened or clicked since, choose a date one month ago. For example, January 16 today means December 16. Choose a timeframe which fits how often you email.
- Use the Contact state filter and choose Has not made any payment yet. This keeps your clients out of the list, so you keep their records for your accounting.
- Select the whole list and click Delete.
2. Stop emailing inactive clients
Keep your clients' records and purchase history. Unsubscribe inactive clients from your emails instead of deleting them. This raises your open rate and protects deliverability.
- Turn on the Email activity filter and choose a date one month ago.
- Select all contacts, click More actions, then Unsubscribe from all marketing emails.
You can also tag inactive contacts and try to win them back with a re-engagement campaign. Avoid this with contacts inactive for a long time.
